This morning I went to see the new Federation of Canadian Artists Abstract Show that is on at their gallery.

My painting, Crashing, had been accepted into the show and I there to see the show as well as pick up another painting.

To my surprise and my delight, I discovered that Crashing won an Award of Excellence. Yeah! Happy Days!

The show is on from now until February 19 at the Federation Gallery on Granville Island.

This was another challenging painting. I painted it a while ago while I was still under the guidance of my teacher. The lotus flower was painted in last, after I decided it would enhance the painting. My teacher suggested I leave the flower out....what do you think? One of my favorite parts of this painting is the light coming through the larger upturned lily pad near the center of the painting. It is hard to see the light coming through in this photo but it glows and I love it....

These apples join up with the pears of One up, two down and the mandarins of By twos (always this "two"... is there some hidden meaning?) ...

Here the texture of the background shines through most clearly in the pulp of apples cut in half, and creates blobs that seem almost "wrong", but that intrigue me a lot...

In this painting I used the same technique of the pears in One up, two down: liquid acrylics for the background, and watercolors for the tangerines.
The texture of the peels comes both from the manipulation of the watercolors (for example by spattering water on the color while it's drying) and from the variegated background created with the liquid acrylics, which, though transparent, are however permanent and are not disturbed by successive washes.

As with pears, I wanted to get an "old botanical illustration" look, but without pushing me too hard for realism... almost a game between precision and imagination.
I don't know if I succeeded, I leave the answer to you...
but I believe that the series of these fruits will not stop here, I'm having too much fun!

Well I tried to remember the lessons learned from my last failed painting, and I wanted to make sure I stayed focused with this one, paying attention to value and colour relationships and thankfully this came together really quickly, with no real reworking involved. Love the way this pear looked when I picked it up, looked like it was on fire as 1 side is a very warm orange.

Still fighting a sinus infection and cough...Antibiotics did not seem to resolve the issue..It's getting a bit old!

I managed to rework of of my larger cow paintings. After looking at it, I decided that I really did not like the original background...We artist have the right to change our minds...What worked for us originally, might not work as well after further scrutiny.

Here is another view of Manyunk from the Cynwyd Heritage Trail. Since I am spending so much time peering into the windows of the houses there, I thought it would be a good idea to find out more about Manyunk. Here is a link to its quite interesting history in Wikipedia.

Some of the highlights are that Manyunk has the first canal begun in the United States. It was once called Flat Rock because of the very large rock near the bridge. The name Manyunk, however, comes from the Lenape word for river "Manaiung", or place to drink. The Lenape seem prescient as Manyunk probably has the most bars and restaurants in the area and is a popular night spot for college students.

The museum show in Joure looks great! I spent the latter of the day decorating, it always takes more time than I anticipate. Fortunately, the museum people were just great. They assisted me along the way and I like to thank them for it! I'll post a couple of pics soon!

What Good Is Art

I feel silly for doing this, but with all the fussing and fighting going on in the Netherlands about the dramatic cutbacks on funds for the arts and a ridiculous tax-raise from 6% to 19% I feel the need to speak up and give you my answer to: ‘What good is art? What purpose does it serve?’

I always thought everybody knew at least some part of the answer, but nowadays it seems like a lot of people in my country don’t got the slightest clue.

Popular Opinion

These days popular opinion says that when art doesn’t sell, it isn’t any good at all. It says that if there’s isn’t somebody willing to purchase your work, you shouldn’t be making the work in the first place and you sure as hell shouldn’t get any funds creating it.

It’s now mandatory for Dutch museums by government policy to curate only shows that attract the most visitors. It doesn’t matter if the show has any cultural meaning or not. It’s all about visitors, visitors, visitors. In other words, if it doesn’t make any money, it doesn’t serve any purpose.

This means that the cultural meaning of art shifted from aesthetics and the gratification it provides over to the money side. Good art can only be expressed in terms of money.

It also means that the artists who are promoted the most are the best ones we have right now. That of course is just plain silly.

There are a lot of good artists out there we haven’t heard of before, because they somehow aren’t in the spotlights yet. Does that mean their work is bad, because nobody bought anything yet? Of course not, at least not by definition.

Why Do People Buy And Love Art?

Then what good is art to begin with? Why do some people buy and love art? Well, let me give you a couple of reasons how to appreciate art other than in terms of money.

Good art answers the big questions in life. It answers questions such as: ‘Why are we here and where are we from? What does it all mean?’ Or at least tries to answer those and many other questions.

It shows that there’s more to life than just average concerns and needs of everyday life. Art should make you feel more clear-headed and intelligent, it should inspire and motivate you to make the best out of your life. It should make you think. Think about yourself and the world we live in.

Art connects people, it has the power to turn total strangers into friends. It gives us coherence and sensations we otherwise would not have experienced. It even has the power to transmute sadness into a thing of beauty.

All art is personal, it expresses something of significance and value to you right now. It expresses your individuality and represents deply held beliefs, feelings and thoughts. It can help you get through rough periods in your life and enhances your self-concept and self-perception.

Owning a painting can be a perfect symbol of your own achievements in life and you feel good anytime you look at it. You are filled with pride if you own an exclusive, one of kind and 100% handmade work that took much skill and effort to produce. Nobody else in the world owns one exactly like it.

Good art influences anybody who steps into your home or office positively. It beautifies your place and enhances the quality of your life. Just think about the impact a room with bare walls has or one that’s filled with art.

Art breathes life into your interior and transforms your home into an unique, personal and engaging environment. It makes you proud to live and work where you do.

People from all over the world come to our national museums to see the great works of past and present. Art doesn’t pollute the air or causes global warming, nor does it need much service. Perhaps not the strongest of reasons, but good art is built to last so one day future generations will enjoy it too.

What Makes Art Good?

Just a bunch of random reasons what good art is and why people appreciate and buy art other than high prices and investment.

Of course we could go into great depth of what style or movement best portrays these reasons and benefits. About what qualifies as good art or bad art.

One might like abstract art, the other saying it’s just worthless crap and realism is the best for some reason. But I hope you realise that we’re not talking about what good art is anymore if we do, but what makes art good.

In other words, we’re not talking about function anymore, but content and form. We’re talking about tastes and that of course is very personal.

Of course artists anywhere should be concerned about making money if they want to do this professionally. You have to sell your work in order to make a living full time. There’s no other way.

You can’t totally rely on government aid to do so. You have to get out there and take full responsibility of your life. You should see it as the valid profession it really is and you have to develop good working habits in order to make it.

But art should never be solely expressed in terms of money. It deprives the work of art of meaning. I for one don’t want to stand in a museum only to be impressed by how much a work of art is worth.

I want to be impressed by it’s meaning and beauty. About what the artist thinks it takes to be human and I for one thank them for it. I sure hope you do too.

This is the last still life painting of a shoe for now. Starting tomorrow I'm going to concentrate on my other beloved subjects.

Later today I'm going to Joure to decorate my solo show at Museum Joure. I'm not sure yet which paintings to bring, but it's going to be a lot. I'm excited about showing my work at this wonderful museum and cannot wait to get started! The show runs from feb. 11 - april 15. I'll keep you posted!

This was quite a difficult painting to create but I am very pleased with the outcome. It is not a new piece. I painted it a while back. The colors I used are considered 'Healing' colors. Green is considered to be the primary color that corresponds to healing, prosperity, balance and well being. White is a color that is considered spiritual and blue is also a spiritual color and very calming. Pay attention....what do you experience when you view it...?

I never get enough of this fascinating artist!

His life was so tortured and he was so talented.

He did so many paintings of sunflowers but each on was so

different. Sunflowers must have made him happy.

I can visualize him standing in a filed of hundreds of them.

I have already painted his bedroom and a living room

for him from my imagination. I was wondering if he had a

study today would it maybe look something like this one?

The wall is my take from a few of his sunflowers.

The vase of sunflowers is from another one of his pieces

as well as the pile of books on the floor. He loved to read.

...and of course his self portrait on the mantel.

This is a mixed media painting full of fantasy and textures. It represents how in my dreams I remember days at the lake during my youth: golden fish, butterflies, dragonflies, feathery plants gently undulating underwater...

The original is on a 16" X 16" X 1.5" gallery wrapped canvas. The paints are acrylics and metalics; the numerous textures were created with acrylic mediums and gels,foil paper, stencils and stamps. This was such a fun painting and quite a departure from my usual realistic works!

This is my final contribution for Valentines Day. At the moment, I am listening to John Lee Hooker singing "I'm Bad Like Jessie James"....a sheer coincidence that this song came on as I was posting "Bad Boy Garfield." What a riot! John Lee sounds really, really bad...badder than Garfield...

Along with the daffodils the freesias are some of the first flowers to appear in the garden, and they gave it such a lift after the bareness of winter. I picked a bunch and their colours inspired me to paint them. I had some dark blue coloured colorfix paper and decided to try coloured pencils. I am not very experienced with coloured pencils but was pleased with the outcome.

I like working on a dark background as it can make the colours 'sing' and often use dark backgrounds for my acrylic and pastel paintings. With the pencils it was difficult to establish the whites, but they did eventually come forward.

Garfield was one of my late mother's favorite cartoon characters. She also loved owls and had a small collection of owl knick knacks and Garfield toys. I keep one of her small stuffed Garfields on the dashboard in my car. This particular Garfield is a small wind-up toy that rocks back and forth when you wind him up. Hope this bring a smile...

John is a remarkable cowboy of our present day. He is tall, lanky, and as a cowboy, he is the real deal. I spotted him seated in this profile next to a chuckwagon during a championship cookout. His cowboy attire typifies the American Spirit...red, white and blue. The contrast of his hat in direct sunlight with face in shadow was an invitation to paint!

Shortly after completing this painting, I learned from some of his friends that he was in an accident with his horse. His firm resolve to survive the broken bones just reinforced my opinion of the all-American Cowboy, quiet, soft spoken, endurance...courage comes in many forms.

If I hadn't painted this, I would love to receive it as a Valentine's Day gift for the sole reason that it would be a total surprise and I probably wouldn't have ever guessed what my gift would have been.

I was in a lighthearted mood a while back when I created this painting. The inspiration for the fish came from a piece of fabric and the turtle is from my imagination. The hearts were an afterthought when I felt the painting needed more..,

I absolutely LOVE butterflies! These paintings could be considered "jewelry for the walls," as these were very much jewel inspired. To add a splash of color to any room... place one on a book shelf, create a grouping of these in a child's room, a small powder room or anywhere to add some color! What fun it was just layering and layering colors with thick palette knife strokes.

As you come into 30th Street Station on the train from New York, just before you get to the station, there is this space. Nothing is there except for the shadow, the trash can and a pile of trash. But there are hints of other places. The car is just beginning to cross the bridge, the space under the bridge is leading somewhere, and there are just a glimpse of Philadelphia sky scrapers in the distance. The tracks in the foreground are headed home. It is a space pregnant with possibilities.

I Work For Myself, Solely!

I always laugh when I hear an artist proclaiming that he only works for himself and his own enjoyment. No, you don’t.

If you would solely work for yourself, you would keep your works to yourself too. There would be no need to show it to others as well, because you already reached your full audience: You.

But of course if you're like any other artist you're quick to show it to other people as well whenever you have a change. That is, if you feel confident enough about it in the first place.

But when you do, you immediately work for those people too. Even if they don’t purchase your work or respond to it in a negative way.

You do, because art is a medium, a way to communicate with others. One of the oldest we have I might add. And just like any other medium it starts serving its purpose as soon as the message is being received by an audience.

There’s of course nothing wrong with that. As a matter of fact that’s how it’s supposed to be: an artist should show his works to as many people as he possibly can. That’s how art receives its true value and meaning.

Of course this can be very frightening or exciting, because you don't control how your art is being received by an audience. As an artist you just hope people are touched, moved or inspired by your work. Or at least feel some type of connection to it. That would be great.

Yes, you should enjoy what you’re making and you should make the best paintings you possibly can. But you don’t work solely for yourself if you show it to other people too. It’s called sharing. And you should enjoy this too.
